Description
This Mass setting is based on Tonus Pereginus (Wandering Tone), chosen because of its association with pilgrimage. It is not clear how the tone came to be called this. It is, however, the only tone with two dominants and it may well be this ‘wandering feel’ that led to this name. Or it may be its traditional association with the Pilgrims’ Psalm (Psalm 113), when the Israelites were freed from Egypt and wandered for forty years in the desert.
